Window damage is one of the most commonly under documented items after a North Texas hail event, for two reasons.
The first is the seal problem above. An adjuster inspecting two weeks after a storm sees glass that looks intact, because it is, and the fogging that will prove the failure has not started yet.
The second is simply that windows are not what anyone came to look at. The inspection was about the roof.
So we document every window at the time of the storm inspection: orientation, condition of glass, frame, seal and screen, photographed by elevation. If seal failures surface later, the record exists showing the condition of those units immediately after the storm. That is the difference between a supplement with evidence and a phone call describing something nobody photographed. See insurance claim assistance.
from ladders where we have to, not just the ground floor.
The frame decides the scope, not the glass.
including screens and seal condition.
glass only, sash, or full unit.
where an opening is through, documented separately for the claim.
including flashing, caulking and trim at the opening.
Three genuinely different jobs, often quoted with the same word.
Glass only. The insulated glass unit is replaced within the existing sash and frame. Right when the frame is undamaged, the sash operates properly, and a matching unit can be obtained. Cheapest, and done properly it is not a compromise.
Sash replacement. The opening panel is replaced while the frame stays in the wall. Suitable where the sash is damaged but the frame is sound and square, and available for many systems where parts still exist.
Full unit replacement. Necessary when the frame is damaged, when the window has moved in the opening, when the manufacturer no longer supplies parts, or when the unit is old enough that new glass in an old frame is money wasted.
Which one you need is decided by the frame. We tell you which, with photographs, before quoting. If you already have a quote for full replacement and want a second opinion on whether the frame really needs to come out, get a free quote and bring it with you.
Wind driven hail does not fall vertically. It arrives at an angle, and the angle decides which elevations get hit and how hard.
Two practical consequences. Window damage clusters on the elevations that faced the storm, and those are frequently not the ones anyone inspects, because attention goes to the front of the house. And upper floor windows take a disproportionate share, since they are more exposed and less shielded by fencing, trees and neighboring structures, and they are also the windows nobody examines closely because you cannot reach them.
We inspect every window on the property. A report covering only the ground floor and the street elevation has covered about a third of them.
We check all four failure modes, not just the broken pane you called about.
We document seal condition at the time of the storm, which is what makes a later supplement possible.
We assess the frame before quoting, because the frame decides the scope.
Screens are included, not quietly left off the scope.
Emergency board up where an opening is through, so the house is closed while the repair is scoped.
One contractor for the whole exterior, so no gap where two trades each assume the other flashed the opening.

4.9★ Rating from 1,235+ Texas Roofing Customers Yes, and it can damage one without cracking it at all. Hail creates hairline cracks, surface pits and stress fractures that hold together initially and open later with thermal cycling. It can also break the edge seal of a double glazed unit while leaving both panes intact, which is the most commonly missed form of window storm damage.
The edge seal has failed. The gas fill has escaped and moist outside air has got in, and the moisture is inside a sealed assembly where cleaning cannot reach it. It can be caused by age, a manufacturing fault, or storm impact and pressure change. If it appeared in the months after a storm that damaged your roof, it is worth raising.
Often yes, provided the frame is undamaged and the sash operates properly. Glass only replacement is the cheapest correct answer when it applies. Where the frame has moved or been damaged, new glass in a compromised frame is a repair that fails twice.
Window damage from a covered storm is commonly part of a property claim, but whether your policy pays, and how it treats each component, is between you, your policy document and your agent. What we do is document every window at the time of inspection so the evidence exists if something is raised later.
Yes. Shredded screens are physical evidence of what hit that elevation and among the most useful corroborating items on a hail claim. They are also cheap to replace, which is exactly why they get waved off and then omitted from the scope.
Worth asking about if you are replacing units anyway, particularly on the elevations that take the weather. Laminated and impact resistant glazing costs more and performs better under impact. Whether it affects your insurance premium is a question for your agent, and we will not quote a discount we cannot verify.
Immediately. An open window is weather, animals and access, in that order of likelihood. We board up as part of our emergency service and the mitigation is normally documented as its own line on a claim.
Once the units are on site, individual windows are usually quick. The time is in manufacturing and delivery, particularly for non standard sizes and after a widespread storm when everyone in the region is ordering. We give you the lead time with the quote.
Yes, and sequencing them together is better. One contract, one set of photographs behind the claim, and no gap where two trades each assume the other dealt with the flashing at the head of the opening.
If a storm has been through, the windows deserve the same look as the roof, and the seal failures will not announce themselves for months.
